The EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) is the fourth macro-regional strategy in the European Union. Macro-regional strategies represent a major innovation in the field of European Territorial Cooperation and regional cohesion.
EUSALP is a joint initiative of seven Alpine countries, including 5 EU Member States (Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Slovenia) and 2 non-Member States (Liechtenstein and Switzerland). The strategy covers about 80 million people in 48 regions.
The aim of the EU Strategy for the Alpine region is to further expand cooperation and coordination between the Alpine regions, which, given the geographical and structural features, have to face similar challenges in many areas. Jointly defined objectives can be implemented more effectively through cross-border cooperation. In addition, the functional relationship between the mountain areas in the heart of the Alpine region and the surroundings with their cities can be strengthened. Moreover, funding instruments can be used more effectively and purposefully.
So far, the following strategic priorities have been developed:
• Enhancing the competitiveness, prosperity and cohesion: this priority focuses mainly on the promotion of innovation and facilitates its practical use. Further goals are the improvement of support for enterprises and the promotion of full employment.
• Accessibility and connectivity for all the inhabitants of the Alpine area: the aim is to improve the quality of transport systems, to make the alpine regions – especially the most remote areas – more accessible and to promote a better digital network.
• Making the Alpine area ecologically sustainable and attractive: this priority includes both, the sustainable management of energy and the protection of the natural and cultural Alpine heritage. In addition, it promotes common strategies against natural threats and common programs in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The European Region Tyrol - South Tyrol - Trentino plays a key role in the areas of mobility, energy and training. In addition, it is planned to establish a common so-called Service Point at the common Office in Brussels.
