The macro-regional EU Strategy for the Alpine Regions (EUSALP) offers the possibility to improve the cross-border collaboration among the regions of the Alps. For this purpose, MEP Herbert Dorfmann and MEP Karoline Graswander-Hainz started this new initiative and invited to a first meeting of the group “MEP Friends of EUSALP, which took place in the premises of the Representation of the European Region Tyrol – South Tyrol – Trentino.

First meeting on January 13, 2016

The participants of the panel MEP Karoline Graswander-Hainz, MEP Herbert Dorfmann, MEP Mercedes Bresso (rapporteur of the own-initiative report “EU strategy for the Alpine region”), MEP Franc Bogovic (shadow rapporteur of the own-initiative report “Cohesion policy in mountainous regions of the EU”), Andrea Mairate of the European Commission und Richard Seeber (Director of the Tyrol Office) underlined the importance of macro regional instruments for the success of the regional policy. Furthermore, they agreed on the importance of the implementation process as a key factor for the success of the strategy. This implementation process will start with the launch conference on 25th and 26th of January 2016 in Brdo/Slovenia (Link to the conference: http://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/en/conferences/alpine-region-2016/ )

The plan for 2016 is to specify the working program and to define the so-called Action groups, which are responsible for the implementation of the strategy. Moreover, the civil society and various stakeholders are going to be included in the implementation process. Another important issue is the cross-sectoral collaboration among different policy areas. This group “MEP Friends of EUSALP” represents a qualified platform of exchange for the participating regions of the macro-regional strategy and the EU Institutions. Further meetings are planned in the following months.
